Wiring Your Premises – How to get connected to J.P.S

HOW TO GET YOUR ELECTRICAL WIRING INSPECTED AND CERTIFIED

Before your wiring can be connected to the JPSCo’s Electric Grid, it will be necessary to get it inspected and certified by the Government Electrical Inspectorate(GEI). The GEI is that agency of government that enforces the technical and safety standards necessary to guarantee the safe operate/utilization of all electrical wirings throughout Jamaica.

HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT GETTING YOUR ELECTRICAL WIRING INSPECTED?

The following outlines the procedure necessary for certification and connection to the JPSCo’s electric grid:

  • Obtain the services of a Licensed Electrician to EITHER carry out the job of wiring your building OR to check and rectify the existing wirings.

  • Sign the NOTICE FORM, presented by the LICENSED ELECTRICIAN whose name appears on that form is the one you have employed to represent you at the GEI.

  • Have your contracted, LICENSED ELECTRICIAN pay the necessary inspection fees, through the Collector of Taxes who will submit the receipt to the GEI. This receipt must be duly signed by the LICENSED ELECTRICIAN, who will also affix his/her Electrician Licence Number to same.

  • The GEI and LICENSED ELECTRICIAN will agree on an inspection date. On that day the GEI inspector must have access to all areas of the building where electrical wiring exists.

  • At the end of inspection an Electrical Inspection Report, on the results of the inspection, will be issued to the LICENSED ELECTRICIAN or his/her representative.

  • An “UNSATISFACTORY REPORT” indicates to faults/defects that must be corrected by the LICENSED ELECTRICIAN. A repeat of the inspection process from Item #3 above, will now be necessary and depending on the faults/defects may incur an additional fee to the GEI.

  • A satisfactory report will allow you to start the process of getting your wiring connected to the JPSCo’s electric grid.

  • BE INFORMED that the GEI will only be able to inform the JPS of the approval/certification of your wiring seven (7) days after the date of inspection.

  • BUSINESS OPERATORS/HOME OWNERS MUST employ LICENSED ELECTRICIANS, as they are the only persons recognised by the ELECTRIC LIGHTING ACT and the GEI.
